Girl on burro and men in front of tents at Yellowjacket Mine Camp

View of Southwestern Mining Company's Quartz Mill along river
The mill crushed quartz and calcite to remove gold and silver ore - this 1987 report (ftp://nas.library.unr.edu/keck/mining/scans/1710/17100082.pdf) describes what the ore looked like.

Assayers casting molds
These molds might have been made to create cupels, special containers made from bone-ash clay - assayers would heat up metal ore in them and the melting dish would absorb lead and base metals and leave a button of pure silver behind. This process was called cupellation.

Men in back of pick-up for scouting trip near Goldfield
Looks to me like the truck belonged to the United Cattle and Packing Co., not the United Land and Cattle Co.
These are great pictures!

Dinner party hosted by Charles Knox, Montana Tonopah Mining Company president
I did your survey, I am looking for some things about my great grandmother, who lived in Tonapah for a time, and this is interesting. Thanks for putting it together.

Hotels in Beatty
What a great gem that reminds us of eras gone by. I was in Las Vegas last month and was staying at a cheap Vegas hotel and got to visit some of the museums that I haven't been to since I'm usually a Strip visitor. It makes you realize how far a shanty town can come in its evolution into the entertainment capital of the world.

Caliente Express April 20, 1905
Excellent! It is wonderful to have so many images available online. and especially to be able to read the newspapers.
I am researching family history; one family member worked for the Salt Lake line, so to have so much available online helps tremendously.
Hope you will continue scanning and digitizing.
Thank You!

Railroad camp cook with puppy and cat
I bet kitty and Fido got the best food before their human counterparts. And they may have licked the pot clean--why bother to wash it!

J.G. Scrugham letter to F.R. McNamee, March 2, 1923
you seem to have a lot of letters to/from F. R. McNamee. Most are attributed to Fred McNamee but I think they should be attributed to Frank McNamee, my great grandfather. He was the chief attorney for the UPR. His son Leo was also the lawyer for the UPR in Las Vegas. Can you send me copies of the correspondences?
Thanks,
Brian Martinet

Condor Canyon Mill
Wonderful picture! We were just in Condor Canyon September 25, 2009 and saw the few remains of this mill. It's wonderful to be able to see what it was like in 1870.

Could we add the "Salt Lake Route" tag to this photo? Also, is there a way to add community tags to photos in this collection?

Very interesting and fun to read! Not very much information on the Gilbert Mine, from what I have found, so this "article" was especially helpful. Great writing .... thank you .

Workers observe construction in Tonopah (or Goldfield)
The picture is definitely of Tonopah. Mount Oddie in the background. Mizpah Mine upper left and Silver Top Mine upper right. 2 story building is the old JC Penney store and later Coleman's Grocery. Building burned down in 1968 or 1969.

Is this definitely Delamar? The mill, tailings, and the mountains behind leave some question as to Delamar being the correct location.

its interesting to see that McWilliams was back in the town after losing the original Las Vegas town site to Sen. Clark.

Night operations at the Delamar Mill
The picture is quite startling in the first place due to being at night and showing the mill. It is interesting also to compare to my picture of what is roughly the same location:

I have a spittoon too like the ones described above. I think it is pretty certain these spitt0ons including mine are reproductions with the value of a reproduction which is probably more in Goldfield than some other place.
